BRONZE SHIELD AND HELMET FROM THE THAMES From time to time, especially while new bridges are being built or old ones being reconstructed, interesting relics of the past are discovered in the foreshore or in the bed of the Thames. Two notable "finds" are illustrated, both of them remarkable examples of the high degree of skilled craftsmanship attained in the Early Iron Age. The very handsome bronze and enamelled shield (from the Thames near Battersea) was probably made within a few years of the birth of Christ. The horned helmet of bronze (found near Waterloo Bridge) was also decorated with bosses of red enamel. Both specimens are in the British Museum
