UK Surgeons operate on a patient at Gravesend Hospital. Only wage earners in the late 1930s were covered by National Insurance with local authorities and charities covering the cost of those in need. Most hospitals were run by voluntary organizations, money being raised from bazaars, flag days and subscriptions. 1939 Picture by John Topham
