Woman Cub Master receives Scout award for gallantry. Saves boy from drowning. For saving a boy from drowning in the Thames Estuary off Canvey Island, the Gilt Cross for gallantry has been awarded to a newly married woman, Mrs Fanton (formerly Miss Liliana Wright), cubmaster of the 7th Barking Group, by Lord Baden Powell. Mrs Panton is one of the very few women to receive the award, which has not been given for many years. Photo shows, Mrs Panton with the boys. She saved from drowning, Rory Jones, aged seven, photographed at Barking after receiving news of the award. 30 November 1937
