Duke of Gloucester unveils statue to Earl Haig in Whitehall. The Duke of Gloucester, in the presence of the Premier, Ministers, the late Field Marshal's son, and 2000 members of the services, unveiled the statue erected to Field Marshal Earl Haig, wartime commander-in-chief of the British forces. The statue, a four ton bronze by Mr AF Hardiman, has been the subject of eight years of controversy. Lady Haig, who objected to the design, is in a nursing home and was, therefore, unable to attend the unveiling. Photo shows, the closely packed crowd surrounding the statue after the unveiling. 10 November 1937
