Boy who was launched on art career by car crash triumphs at Royal Academy. Awarded medals and travelling scholarship. John Erhart Kashdan, an 18-year-old pawnbrokers messenger, has won the biggest prize of the Royal Academy for art students, the Royal Academy ,Gold Medal, the Edward Stott travelling scholarship of 瞿200 tenable for a year, three other prizes (worth 瞿25) and two medals. Kashdan's chance of an art career came when he received 瞿200 compensation for being knocked off his bicycle by a car in Epping Forest. With the money he brought paint, canvases, and took an art course. He lived on 瞿1 a week and eked out his money with odd jobs. He now hopes to continue his art studies in Paris.
