Beefeaters search sellers of Houses of Parliament before state opening. In accordance with custom dating back to the time of Guy Fawkes, Yeoman warders of the Tower (Beefeaters) searched the cellars of the Houses of Parliament before the state opening by the King. The custom dates from the days of James I, when Guy Fawkes and his co-conspirators were arrested and executed for the Gun Powder. Barrels of gunpowder were secreted into the vaults beneath the Houses of Parliament and it was proposed to fire them when the King and the ministers assembled on 5 November. The plot was hatched to avenge harsh treatment of Roman Catholics. Photo shows, the Beefeaters (Yeoman Warders of the Tower of London) lined up at the Houses of Parliament before making the inspection. 26 October 1937
