British police officer who was beaten by Japanese in Shanghai. The beating up by Japanese soldiers of Sgt A R Turner, and inspector F G West, Britons belonging to the International Settlement police force at Shanghai, has resulted in a strong protest to the Japanese by Brigadier General Telfer Smollett, British Commander-In-Chief at Shanghai. Sgt Turner, who comes from Birkenhead, standing near a British outpost when he remarked the Japanese troops seemed unnecessarily rough as they searched Chinese hawkers who wish to cross into the Settlement from the Japanese occupied area. A Japanese then punched him on the nose, and Japanese troops crossed the frontier and dragged Sgt Turner over to their side of the border, where he was badly manhandled. Inspector West was beaten when he tried to rescue Turner. Photo shows, Sgt A R Turner of the International Settlement Police. 8 January 1938
