Anderson Jardine, known as the "poor man's parson" in his working-class parish of St Paul, Darlington, arrived at Tours, France to conduct the Church of England service at the wedding of the Duke of Windsor and Mrs Wallis Warfield (Simpson) in the Chateau de Cande. The Vicar said he volunteered to conduct the service. A statement issued on behalf of of the Bishop of Fulham, who has jurisdiction over the Anglican Church in France, said that the action was taken without his knowledge or consent.
