Highly qualified women scientists are employed at the Central weather bureau in Moscow , which serves the entire Soviet Union with the weather forecast and that meteorological information . Reports on weather conditions are received by the bureau four times every 24 hours and 500 meteorological staions , situated all over Russia and from about 600 stations in foreign countries . The results of the investigations are broadcast by radio throughout the Soviet Union and charts made by the bureau are transmitted by telephone to important provincial centres . The bureau has recently been making observations in the upper layers of the atmosphere by means of radio sounding balloons . Weather forecast for long periods ahead are now being issued .
