Hundreds of whales stranded on Tasmanian beach . Nearly 300 whales varying in length from four feet to 25 feet were stranded at Tatlow ' s beach , about a mile east of Stanley , Tasmania . For some inexplicable reason , the whales went ashore on a sandspit and could not regain deep water . It is estimated that their removal will cost the authorities ?4000 at least .
