Chinese prepare for Japanese onslaught on Nanking . These pictures , just received in London , show how the Chinese troops , equipped with some of the most modern of war equipment , are making intensive preparations to defend their capital of Nanking against the first onslaught of the Japanese marching on from captured Shanghai . The Japanese have already taken Soochow , on the road to Nanking , and the Chinese Governmenthas been moved 1 , 000 miles further inland . To take the capital the Japanese troops will have to break through China ' s ' Hindenburg line ' . Photo shows, Chinese soldiers , using new portable range finders , searching the skies for raiding Japanese planes at Nanking . These range finders are slung round the soldiers necks and each carries a towel to keep the lenses clean . 21 November 1937 *** Local Caption ***
