London makes the bagpipes for bonnie Scotland . Even the materials come from abroad . The bagpipes traditionally Scotland ' s own , originated , it is said , in the East . Now it seems , Scotland cannot even claim that they are made north of the border , for the majorty of the pipes used in Scottish regiments at home and aboard are constructed in a Kentish Town , London , factory . Cockneys make the skirling pipes for the Highlanders , and even the material is imported from abroad . The only part that is really scottish is the tartan plaid decorating the windbag . The wood for the mouthpiece and pipes is Mozambique ebony for the the mouthpiece and pipes at the Kentish Town factory . Photo shows , one of the workmen gives a tea hour serenade on a completed set of pipes at a London factory . . 7 April 1936
