City men see last of the new Bow Bells cast with fitting ceremony at Croydon . The last of the new peal of Bow Bells was cast at the foundry of Gillett and and Johnstone at Croydon when it received the blessing of the City of London and the church . Masters of several city companies were present . The bell was a 2 1/2 tenor .The weight of the whole peal of twelve bells is 10 1/2 tons . For centuries Bow Bells have been a traditional part of the City , but they have not been heard for six years because of the need for their being recast and because of the defective condition of the belfry of St Mary le Bow , Cheapside .
