City of Drobeta Turnu Severin; Romania: Recosntruction and restoration of medieval fortess of Catholic order of St John; Background Medieval Fortress; also called Severin Fortress; in city center of Drobeta Turnu Severin; Romania: The relics of this fortress; 500 m west of the ancient Roman Danube Bridge; were rediscovered in 19th century. First archeological excavations suggested here the place of an ancient Dacian fortress; which is designed on Trajan's column; in Rome. In 20th century; it became quite clear; that in 1247 AD; Hungarian kingdom ordered the catholic knights of St John to take over the mighty St Severin (St Severus) fortress on this strategically most important place near Iron Gates of Danube. The fortress soon became the most important stronghold along Lower Danube. While there might have been constructions just in 10th century AD; archeologists found three phases of definite constructions: First was end of 13th century; by Romanian forces. Second started after occupation of Severin by Hungarians; in 1419; third started during presence of the knights (mid of 15th century); who left in late 15th century. The fortress lasted until 1524; when Severin fortress was destroyed by Ottomans under Suleiman the Magnificent (Soliman the Great). It only remained one tower of the fortress; which brought to birth the new city name Turnu Severin; "tower of Severin" (Severus); in 1833. This tower might have remained for another 20 years; not longer than 1550. In 2013; excavations and reconstruction works of the medieval fortress continued.
