Kaleto Fortress; village of Belogradchik; Bulgaria: viw inside fortress direction old prison of fortress; Background: Belogradchik fortress; is the main attraction in the tiny little village (ca. 5300 inhabitants); which is situated 545 m above sea level and 50 km south of Danube. The citadel like huge area (10 210 m? gave also name to the village; literary meaning "small white construction". Its second name Kaleto derives from Turkish "kale" (fortress). The complex consists of three separate courtyards; is connected via gates; and walled (over 2 m thick; up to 12 m high). The earliest structure was of Roman origin (1st to 3rd century AD) and limited on top of the rocky hill; using the natural defense system of up to 70 m high surrounding shaped limestone rocks. Also the nearby Roman outpost Latin Fortress is part of famous Belogradchik rocks; candidate of UNESCO World heritage and 2009 nominated in the campaign of new 7 world wonders of nature. In fact; the well maintained natural beauty of the area was one of the key reasons make Belogradchik win the EDEN (European destination of excellence) award 2008. Originally; legionnaires observed and controlled the military road to Roman logistic knot Naissus (today: Ni? Serbia). The road started in Ratiaria (later Colonia Ulpia Traiana Ratiaria; today near village of Archar; Vidin province); where Legio IV Flavia Felix was based until conquest of Dacia (106 AD); together with the Roman navy (in time of Emperor Vespasian). Ratiaria on Danube Limes was also commercially evident due to a gold mine in the vicinity. Worth a record is also the archeological area of Anishte along today's Salash - Belogradchik road east of Granichak village: Scientists discovered ruins of an ancient village; pottery fragments and coins from 3rd century AD; a Roman road station of the mentioned route Ratsiaria - Naissus; destroyed in early 4th century.The strategic advantages of the fort were discovered also by Byzantines; Bulgarians and Ottoma
