The Black Hawk; Muck-a-tah-mish-o-kah-kaik; chief of the Sauk or Sac nation. He was dressed in a plain suit of buckskin; with a string of wampum in his ears and on his neck; and held in his hand his medicine-bag; which was the skin of a black hawk; and the tail of which made him a fan. Handcoloured lithograph by J. Harris after a painting by G. Catlin from James Cowles Prichard's Natural History of Man; Balliere; London; 1855.
