Interior of Baddiyah Mosque; Fujairah. This is believed to be the oldest mosque still in use in the UAE. Lacking a minaret and hidden at the base of a rocky hill; it may have been used for worship before Islam was fully accepted here. According to local legend the mosque was endowed by a fisherman in gratitude to Allah after the discovery of an unusually precious pearl. Nearby is the hamlet of Lu'lu'bia; "the pearly place." Country of Origin: United Arab Emirates. Culture: Islamic. Credit Line: Werner Forman Archive. Location: 07.
