Gandan Monastery (Gandanteggchinlen Khid) was started in 1838 by the fifth Bogd Khan. The monastery survived the purges of the 1930s and today houses about 150 monks.The building is the Magjid Janraisig Sum which houses a 20 ton statue of Avalokiteshvara dating from 1997.
