Twelve Soviet ships are engaged in oceangraphic research, among them 'Vityaz' and 'Mikhail Lomonosov', and the investigations carried out by them are of particular importance. There are 15 laborities on board the 'Vityaz' where some 60 scientists are working. The ship has already completed its fourth major cruise under the IGY programme. During these trips depth soundings were made in many oceans, new underwater depressions and mountains were discovered, and the existence of a permanent exchange of depth and surface waters was established.
