The Shawa Dragon Pagoda in Rangoon - The majestic Shwedagon (Golden Dagon) Pagoda, Rangoon, Myanmar, dominates the Rangoon skyline from every vantage point. For Burmese Buddhists this is the most sacred of all sites in Myanmar, one which all Burmese aspire to visit at least once in their lifetimes. Legend has it that the Shwedagon was built to house 8 hairs of the Buddha; these rest in a chamber below a golden slab under the large golden stupa (dome). The golden stupa rises 98m and is solid in construction. It is believed to have been built by the Mon people between the 6th and 10th centuries, but has been rebuilt many times as a result of earthquakes, etc. 固opFoto
