This is the foot of the Downs, between Tattenham Corner and the winning-post. The booth on the left is grandly called the "Royal REFORM CLUB''; its sign announces hazard and rouge et noir. The game being played on the nearest little table is thimblerig; the sharper behind the Scotsman is a three-card-trick man. These people constitute what a contemporary calls 'the degraded mob, the blasphemous, greedy, obsene Bohemianism that riots on Epsom Downs.' The 1856 Derby was won by Admiral Harcourt's Ellington at 20 to 1, a good horse by The Flying Dutchman. Prince Albert was present, but not the queen.
