The champagne bubble effect in this photograph is created by plastic models of the crystal structure of uranium. The US scientist studying the models is seeking an understanding of structural changes that occur in uranuim under intense heat inside a nuclear reactor. This mockup of the crystal structure the first known simulation of the placement of atoms at high temperatures, and the unique measuring equipment he is using were developed by General Electric Company.
