William Thomas Beckford (1760-1844). English author and eccentric. Forced out by England by scandals about his private life, he published Vathek 1787 in Paris, an Arabian Knights tale. On his return he built his home, Fonthill Abbey in Wiltshire, as Gothic fantasy.
