A grain mill has a mechanical bolter, or cylindrical sieve. Leonardo's drawing is the first of its kind. When the handle of the lens grinder is turned, both grindstone and lens revolve, at different speeds. The screw being made on the thread-cutting machine (bottom) is in the centre. The gauge of the thread is altered by changing the size of the gears. A set of gear-wheels is shown.
