This is Derby day 1886, in the week before the Cup. The Victorian Derby was inaugurated in 1855; it attracted crowds only less great than those for the Cup, though in this privileged paddock area all is seemly and demure. The winner was Trident, centre (by Robinson Crusoe by Angler by Fisherman). Others in the picture include the Duke of Manchester and Miss Blair's Aboriginal, in the sailorsuit.
