This watercolour, c.1830, is the work of a Kalighat painter of Bengal. Racing was by now widespread and popular, and Calcutta was its headquarters. No doubt the artist saw it, but his design is said to owe as much to English prints as to observation; therre is certainly a strong look of John Nost Sartorius and even James Seymour in the stylised positions of the horses.
