'Masters at Work' - Nijinsky, Lester Piggott, Vincent O'Brien. The horse was bred in Canada in 1967; his pedigree is discussed on p.284. He was twice defeated at the end of a long three-year-old season, by Sassafras and Lorenzaccio, but he was a great horse and full of the 'electricity' characteristic of the best descendants of Nearco. The jockey was born in 1936. He rode his first winner at 13; he won the Derby on Never Say Die at 18, and won it again on Crepello (1957), St Paddy (1959), Sir Ivor (1968), Nijinsky (1970), and Roberto (1972). The trainer - christened Michael Victor, born 1917 - graduated from dominance of steeplechasing to equal eminence on the flat, his greatest successes having been for American owners.
