William Tregonwell Frampton (c.1641-1727) was Keeper of the Running Horses at Newmarket for four sovereigns, and from Queen Anne's reign 'Governor' of Newmarket. He was an owner, match-maker, coper, and deep plunger on his own account. His first good horse was Nutmeg, which beat the Duke of Albermarle's Black Buttocks about 1687 and won him a lot of money. The horse in the picture is alleged, in the 1790 caption to this print, to be Dragon; the gamecock and greyhound stand for his other absorbing passions.
