Sam Chifney Junior. 'Sylvanus' said: 'As for Sam, he was out-and-out the beau ideal of a jockey when in his prime; and for elegance of seat, perfection of hand, judgement of pace, and power in his saddle, was excelled by no man who ever sat in one.' Chifney (1786-1855) is here shown at 21, returning to scale. Five years later he blatently stopped the favourite Manuella in the Derby of 1812. He won the Derbys of 1818 and 1820 for 'Squire' Thornhill, who gave enough money to outweigh the bribes of the legs. He became so lazy that his last years were spent in a kind of stupor.
