The 1876 Epsom Derby Winner was Hungarian-bred of imported English parents. He was by Buccaneer, by the Derby winner Wild Dayrell, who descended from Sir Peter Teazle, out of a Rataplan mare whose dam was by Birdcatcher. His owners in England were the jovial young Baltazzi brothers, Rugby educated Levantines. He appeared at Epsom on Derby day thanks to a moneylender who got the Baltazzis out of trouble with another moneylender. He was greatly fancied and won with great ease. He was nobbled before the St Leger. At stud he was disappointing. The History of Horse Racing by Roger Longrigg, page 199. *** Local Caption ***
