Les Halles in the morning. Passing by the meat pavilion, a young woman fish porter hurries by carrying balanced on her shoulder a wooden box containing oysters whilst a passer-by wearing a trilby hat stares. None of the buyers wore trilby hats - they either wore no hats or flat caps to make themselves easily recognised. This pedestrian crossing in front of the young woman is like lots of people who took a short cut through the market on their way to work or on their way home. It saved them a lot of time walking about. In the background is a refrigerated trailer parked in the entrance to a covered through road next to the meat pavilion. In the foreground is a meat van which is open ready for loading with carcasses. Rue Rambuteau, Quartier des Halles, 1er arrondissement, Right Bank, Paris, France, circa 1960s.
