Les Halles at night in the area around the Baltard pavilions and some way beyond known as the carreau forain. All sorts of different vegetables were out in the streets in wooden boxes and crates. A porter is out in the road carrying a large quantity of mushrooms and pauses to adjust and make his load more comfortable. He is carrying baskets made of thin wood full of cultivated mushrooms (champignons de Paris). Baskets are secured at both ends of a leather strap on his left shoulder and are balanced with one at his front and one at his back.
