This wholesale business also imports first fruits and vegetables from Algeria and Morocco. Wooden vegetable boxes containing a variety of fresh green beans are displayed under a light to attract buyers. The central food market of Les Halles was a sprawling area, known as the Quartier des Halles, with covered streets and through roads linking the pavilions, wholesale stores in side streets away from the pavilions, and a chaos of stalls, wholesalers and retailers filling roads and narrow streets at night known as the carreau forain that had to be cleared by the time the ordinary working day was about to begin.
