Early morning. An elderly man wearing a trilby hat and dark glasses is feeding the pigeons scattering birdseed in the Place de l'Opera with the Palais Garnier in the background. Into the hat band are tucked his train tickets. He is in front of the exit to the Opera Metro station. Cars and other vehicles are parked quite freely in front of the Opera House, one of which is the famous VW Camper Van. At this time feeding the pigeons in Paris was allowed but became forbidden later in 1963. Photographer Harold Chapman recalls that he went to take the picture because he had heard it was going to be forbidden but it soon proved impossible to enforce as there were too many pigeons in Paris which provided happiness and joy to many elderly people. Place de l'Opera, 9e arrondissement, Right Bank, Paris, France, 1963.
