The Man in the Iron Mask or Le Vicomte de Bragellone - The date of his arrest: 1669 and the date of his death: 1703. Between the Bastille, where he died, and Pignerol, a fortress in the French northern Alps, where he was first sent, he was transferred twice, first in 1681 to Exiles, close to Pignerol, then to the fortress island of Sainte Marguerite, off the French southern coast, near Cannes. This second transfer took place in 1687 and he remained on that island until 1698, when his goaler Saint Mars was given the governorship of the Bastille. It is important to note that Saint Mars watched over the man in the iron mask from his first day until his death. - ?Topfoto / Fortean
