The Place de la R閜ublique is a square in Paris; located on the border between the 3rd; 10th and 11th arrondissements. It is named after the French Republic.In 1879; a competition; to design a the monument devoted to the newly-proclaimed Third Republic; was won by the Morice brothers; L閛pold Morice for the statuary and relief-panels of historic scenes; and his architect brother Charles Morice for the base. Two inauguration ceremonies took place; the first on 14 July 1880 with a gypsum model; and the second on 14 July 1883 with the final version in bronze.IN THE PHOTO: 14 July 1790 had sealed a great movement of brotherhood in a blaze of glory. The Champ-de-Mars in Paris had been laid out as a huge amphitheatre; dominated by the 襛ltar to the homeland?to welcome a crowd estimated at three hundred thousand; in addition to the fourteen thousand f閐閞閟 who had come from the provinces to represent the nation.
