Heiligkreuztal; Germany; relic. In addition to four full skeletons acquired as presumed relics of martyrs from the Roman Catacombs; the nuns at the former Cistercian convent in Heiligkreuztal also acquired various partial relics; including this skull. The skull is covered in wax; which was sculpted to create a more lifelike face. The identity of this relic is indeterminate; but presumably it also was believed to be the relic of a martyr from the catacombs. Photo 2012.
