Gutenzell; Germany; St. Justina; detail of hand grasping the pommel of a sword. The sword was a popular attribute for full skeleton relics in the 17th and 18th centuries; as it implied both martyrdom and their role as soldiers of Christ (Miles Christi). The skeleton was acquired in the late-19th century as a presumed martyr from the Roman Catacombs. Justina was the first of four full skeletons acquired as relics by the former Cistercian convent church. Two skull relics were also later acquired. All of the relics are still in the church; but not normally seen; since they are hidden by painted covers. Photo 2010.
