Bua; Tana Toraja; Indonesia; tau tau in burial cave. On the island of Sulawesi. Tau tau are statues of ancestral dead; and embody their spirit. They are in a cave which traditionally served as a cemetery for the town of Bua; which is near Rantepao. In Torajan culture; grave sites are considered sacred; and might be used for up to 30 generation. They are called Banua Tang Merambu; or 鈥楬ouse without fire; smoke; or kitchen.' Photo 2013.
