Colca Canyon (Ca駉n del Colca); Peru; detail of skulls at burial site. The canyon is dotted with various burial sites; many of them pre-Columbian. The Inca probably arrived in the canyon in the 14th century; but previously Cabana and Collagua settlements were present. This burial site in this photo is placed high on a hillside. It has been entered and disturbed--the skulls were not meant to be displayed here on the lip. Photo 2010.
