Roncesvalles; Spain; bones at the bottom of the Silo de Carlomagno. In the Basque region; the charnel is thought to date to Carolingian times; and its name is based on the fact that it is a deep pit; and the remains were once believed to have been soldiers of Charlemagne's that died fighting Moors locally. The town was part of the pilgrimage route to Santiago de Compostela; so it may be more likely that these are the bones of travelers who died en route there. Photo 2010.
