Wald (Walbertsweiler); Germany; detail of head of St. Dioscuros. The skeleton was acquired as that of a presumed martyr from the Roman Catacombs; and arrived in the former Cistercian convent church in the early 18th century. A wax face was created atop his skull to create a more lifelike visage. This was trend typical of certain areas of Bavaria and Swabia. Photo 2012.
