Urbania; Italy; mummies in Chiesa dei Morte (Church of Death). The church served the local Confraternita della Buona Morte; a local brotherhood engaged in providing burials for poor people. Their cemetery was exhumed in the early 19th century; following a hygiene edict which prohibited burials in the town center. Many of the bodies were found naturally mummified; and used to decorate the apse of the church. The inscription above them translates as 鈥楴ow behold the dust of death.' Photo 2009.
