Hiltensweiler; Germany; chest detail of St. Valentine. The detail shows the opening in the costume to reveal the full ribcage of the skeleton. Little history is preserved on the relic; but there is no doubt that it was brought to the town's parish church as the presumed skeleton of a martyr discovered in the Roman Catacombs. It is still in the church; but not on public display--it now lays flat in a shrine against the wall of the sacristy. It is one of many preserved relics of martyrs in Germany named after the authentic St. Valentine. Photo 2012.
