Leuk; Switzerland; charnel with plague crucifix (Pestkreuz). The charnel is underneath the parish church. It was reconstructed in the twentieth century. The charnel takes up one half of the basement; the other half serving as funerary chapel. This detail shows a fresco painting on one of the walls of The Triumph of Death; one of two similarly themed paintings in the basement. The large crucifix shows Christ with pronounced skin lesions to liken his suffering to plague victims and thus console them. Photo 2009.
