Oppenheim; Germany; skull in wall of bones in charnel at the church of Katharine (Katharinenkirche). The skull shows a warn patch on the forehead; apparently from people rubbing it superstitiously in the belief it would bring luck--evidence of this kind of activity is sometimes found in charnels. This charnel is notable in being the largest surviving in a church converted to Protestant worship; since Protestants usually did away with such displays. It is built on the old church cemetery grounds. Photo 2009.
