La Paz; Bolivia; Fiesta de las 補titas; skull with coca leaves in mouth. The annual celebration is held on 8 November; to commemorate and thank the 馻titas; which are skulls kept in shrines at home. These skulls are considered as helpers and intercessors for the living. The largest celebration is at the Cementerio General (Cemetery General). This photo was taken on the cemetery grounds during the afternoon of the Fiesta; and it shows a close-up of a skull with coca leaves placed in its jaws. Chewing coca leaves is typical of the Aymara; and they are frequently offered to the skulls. Photo 2009.
