Oil well in Iraq. Oil well rig and drilling and piping machinery south of Kirkuk, Iraq. This camp was operated by the Iraq Petroleum Company. The Iraq Petroleum Company was formed in 1929 from the renaming of the Turkish Petroleum Company (founded 1912). This photograph was taken in the period between 26 September and 12 October 1932 by the American Colony Photo Department of Jerusalem. This was the period when the Kingdom of Iraq was established. Previously, the area had been a League of Nations mandate under British control.
