Head from a coffin of an aristocratic male. Created using the encaustic method with which many Faiyum portraits were painted. The process involved suspending pigment in wax which was then applied to a shallow wooden panel. Country of Origin: Egypt. Culture: Ancient Egyptian. Date / Period: Roman; 1st - 2nd C BC. Place of Origin: Fayum. Material / Size: Gilded wood & incrustatons of ivory and jet; H=29.5 cm.
