Slingsby Bethell; Esq.; a Sheriff of London in 1680; from a scarce print in the British Museum. He wears a ceremonial robe of scarlet trimmed with fur over a long coat; pink stockings and buff shoes. Handcolored engraving from 鈥楥ivil Costume of England from the Conquest to the Present Period' drawn by Charles Martin and etched by Leopold Martin; London; Henry Bohn; 1842. The costumes were drawn from tapestries; monumental effigies; illuminated manuscripts and portraits. Charles and Leopold Martin were the sons of the romantic artist and mezzotint engraver John Martin (1789-1854).
